Description
Photograph of an art print depicting Durga, a Hindu deity.

Durga, or Durga Mata, is a Hindu deity, a principal form of the supreme Goddess, also known as Devi and Shakti. Durga is revered across India, and there are two major festivals held annually in her honor, Durga Puja and Navratri. According to legend, Durga was created by the devas, male Hindu gods, to slay the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Clay images, called murtis, are usually created for the festival of Durga Puja to commemorate Durga's victory over Mahishasura. The goddess is known by a variety of other names and assumes various avatars. The goddess and her avatars vary in appearance and are depicted accordingly in art, sculpture, and murtis created during festivals. She is usually depicted riding a lion or tiger and having 8 or 10 arms, each holding the special weapon of one of the gods.
