Description
Photograph of a dance performance at a Diwali show put on by the Sanatan Dharm Cultural Society, held at the Fraserview Hall in Vancouver, B.C.

Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is a major religious festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs, and translates to "the Festival of Lights." The festival lasts five days: the first day is known as Dhanteras; followed by Choti Diwali; Lakshmi Puja, which is the main celebration; Govardhan Puja; and finally Bhai Dooj. The festival is typically marked by the cleaning and decorating of homes, as well as the lighting of diyas and rangoli designs. Each region in India and religion has their own manner of celebrating Deepavali and their own gods to be worshipped.

Organized by the Sanatan Dharm Cultural Society, Shiv Mandir is a Hindu temple located in Burnaby, B.C. It stands as a spiritual center for the Indo-Fijian community of Hindus in the Lower Mainland. The temple offers teachings on subjects such as reading and writing in Hindi, religious studies, and cultural customs.

Located on Fraser Street, Fraserview Hall has been a staple venue for various South Asian Canadian community events in Vancouver, B.C. over the past two decades.
