Description
Photograph of Debra McPherson from British Columbia Nurses' Union speaking at a march held for International Women's Day, held in Vancouver, B.C.
Debra McPherson is the former president of the B.C. Nurses' Union, having been elected in 1990 after joining the union in 1981. As of 2014, she was the longest-serving president in the union's history. During her presidency, she negotiated a 23.5 percent wage increase for nurses. In 1989, she co-led the "No Vote" campaign, a pivotal moment in the history of BCNU.
International Women's Day (IWD) is a specific day dedicated to the advancement of women worldwide; celebrated annually on March 8, to honor the achievements of women across all aspects of life – social, economic, cultural, and political – while also advocating for gender equality. Originating from labor movements in the early 20th century, IWD has evolved into a globally recognized occasion marked by events, discussions, and initiatives advocating for inclusivity and equity. IWD was marked for the first time in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, on March 19, with more than one million women and men attending rallies.
Formed in 1981 and representing over 50000 members, British Columbia Nurses' Union is the largest nursing union in BC. They offer services nurses of all four domains: research, clinical practice, leadership, and education. Their mission is to protect and advance the health, safety, social and economic well-being of their members, the profession and their communities. Their core values are collectivity, democracy, equality, excellence, integrity, social justice, and solidarity. They have a long withstanding history of advocating for their nurses, which included improving the wages and conditions of long term care nurses, launching anti-violence campaigns, negotiating collective agreements to give nurses tools to reduce heavy workloads, launching major violence-prevention campaigns, making it easier for nurses to access workers' compensation, amongst other initiatives.
