Tarun Nayar is a musician and trained biologist. He has had formal training in Indian classical music since childhood and has been educated as a biologist. He is well-known as Modern Biology, an artist that creates music using modular synthesis and home built synthesizers, along with other analog equipment, to produce music from nature and plants, specifically mushrooms. Many of his pieces are created by recording the bioelectric pulses from living plants and fungi, which are then overlaid with his original compositions. Nayar has been featured in The Guardian, BBC, Genius, Vice, The Verge, and LA Times, among others. He is the Executive Director of 5X Fest, a South Asian millennial festival inspired by the SXSW and Afropunk fests. He is a co-founder of the digital label Snakes x Ladders. He is also a founding member of Delhi 2 Dublin, a live electronic, bhangra, hip-hop, world-pop, hybrid act.
Neelamjit Dhillon is a professional musician equally versed in both Eastern and Western traditions. He is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles. Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Dhillon is skilled in both North Indian classical and American jazz music. He has obtained a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies (majoring in saxophone performance) from Capilano College and has also completed a Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary Music Education from the University of British Columbia. The tabla is Dhillon's first instrument, an instrument he has played since the age of 10, and he studies under the tutelage of Ustad Zakir Hussain. His primary instruments also include the saxophone and bansuri. Dhillon has had the distinction of working with some of India's finest, such as Louiz Banks, Fazal Qureshi, Rakesh Chaurasia and Taufiq Qureshi. He has performed around the world at events and festivals in locales such as Somalia, India, Brazil, Europe, the United States, and Canada.
Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is a major religious festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs, and translates to "the Festival of Lights." The festival lasts five days: the first day is known as Dhanteras; followed by Choti Diwali; Lakshmi Puja, which is the main celebration; Govardhan Puja; and finally Bhai Dooj. The festival is typically marked by the cleaning and decorating of homes, as well as the lighting of diyas and rangoli designs. Each region in India and religion has their own manner of celebrating Deepavali and their own gods to be worshipped.
